Cover Love - 2024 Rainbow List
While we don’t judge people around here, we do sometimes judge books by their covers.
And one of my favorite Cover Love book displays every year is based on the American Library Association’s Rainbow List. One of the ALA’s subcommittees releases a list of their favorite LGBTQ+ books published in the previous calendar year. You can see the full list, with summaries of the books, here.
With the surge in book challenges, I think this list is more important than ever, and I’ve bookmarked several of these excellent-sounding middle grades books for my own kids for in a few years.
Anyway, I take their list and I make it pretty!

Not feeling judgy? Here are a few notes and stand outs.
The Salt Grows Heavy is a fairytale novella, Northranger is spooky graphic novel, We Deserve Monuments won a ton of awards as a mystery/romance/family drama, and Any Other City is a fictionalized two-sided music memoir that sounds really interesting.
Dear Medusa (realistic novel-in-verse), This Winter (realistic short story by the author of Heartbreaker and winner of an Audie Award), and Gay Poems for Red States (summary in title, I think) are all on my to-read list.
All of the nonfiction on this list sounds super interesting to be honest, so for example, check out these subtitles:
The First To Die At the End is a prequel to They Both Die At the End, set on the first day Death-Cast goes live. “They Both” ripped my heart open and left me to die bawling in a corner, so save “The First” for when you need a good cry. I don’t think you need to read the first to read this.
Read books and be an ally. xoxo Lai
